In South Asia home owners use bamboo blinds as an inexpensive air conditioner - water is sprayed onto the blinds and as the water evaporates it  gives a cooling effect indoors.  Maybe we wouldn't use them this way here in North America but coupled with heavier draperies we might have the best of both worlds. Certainly bamboo blinds offer shade with  beautiful dappled light. They are also a way to introduce the natural look into your own personal environment.  The word here is renewable.
